Better question: What is a God moment? Sometimes it is as simple as recognizing God in a beautiful sunset or arrangement of clouds. Other times it can be an unusual experience which signals that something bigger is at work in the life or lives of people around us. Sometimes it is when a number of events happen and you see the thread of the working of the Holy Spirit throughout it all. For the most part, a God moment is when you truly see God at work in your life. It is good to share these experiences with others.
Just the other week, I experienced a beautiful God moment. At the wedding of Beth and Glenn Weber on July 5, I preached on Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, as he was celebrated the day before on July 4 and is actually going to be canonized next year in the Jubilee Year of 2025. I mentioned that Pier Giorgio always carried around St. Paul’s “Hymn of Charity” from the First Letter to the Corinthians to help keep him focus on what truly counts in life and remember how no matter what he did in this world, if he did not have love, he would be “a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.” This was the reading they used at the wedding. But more amazingly, at the reception, they actually gave away laminated passages of First Corinthians that could easily be held in your pocket! They didn’t know that I was going to preach on that, but the Holy Spirit was at work and connected everything so well. Praise God!
In the gospel this weekend, it would have been pretty easy for the disciples and the crowd to articulate their “God moment” that week. Sometimes it is very easy and apparent to witness God’s working in our lives, while other times it can be more challenging. Keep your eyes open to recognize God’s handiwork in your life this week and don’t forget to share that experience with others when you do.
May God’s work be abundant in your life,
Fr. Jeremy
