A Thankful Heart

A Thankful Heart

Posted on : November 21, 2025

Just this past week, I went on my annual silent retreat. This year, I went to St. Vincent in Latrobe, PA and spent a week with the Benedictine monks. It happens to be the place where the Steelers practice (forgive me 😊). Because of this, Keith Obermeier, who is in formation—along with Joe Hercules—to be a deacon in our diocese, offered to write this week’s bulletin reflection…

A minor inconvenience, like driving a rental car, recently provided me with a valuable Thanksgiving lesson. The subtle differences in the rental made me realize the comforts of my own car that I had been taking for granted. This experience highlighted how easily we overlook the numerous gifts God provides. Like the Thanksgiving song, it’s good to take time to "Count Your Blessings."

I am grateful for my family and the comfortable life we lead, the strong faith foundation from my church family at St. Francis de Sales, and my opportunity to further my faith journey in the Diaconate formation program. Above all, I am thankful for the precious gifts God has given us all, especially the Blessed Sacrament. The very word "Eucharist" derives from the Greek word for "Thanksgiving." During the consecration when the priest prays "Do this in remembrance of Me," it is a fitting moment to offer a heartfelt "thank you" to God for this Holy Gift.

Most of us have been given far more than we need. It is important to remember those who are less comfortable, especially as food security has become a significant problem in our community. Please remember to share from our overflowing cups. On Thanksgiving, the St. Vincent de Paul society will collect donations of food and money to stock the food pantry. Please bring something to share at the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Thursday, and begin your holiday by giving thanks to God, from whom all blessings flow.

Thank you for your continued prayers for those in formation. I have been assigned to serve the St. Anthony community in North Hill this year. Being in a new parish is another opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and recognize the wonderful gifts of my home parish. Our greatest growth often comes when we allow ourselves to be uncomfortable, roll up our sleeves, and become a part of God’s workforce. Keep your heart open to His call; it is a beautiful journey.

As we approach Thanksgiving, know of my gratitude and thanksgiving for all of you, especially as you pray and live for His glory!

With gratitude for you,
Fr. Jeremy
